Dollar General is rolling back self-checkout in thousands of stores

Dollar General is changing its approach to self-checkout by removing self-checkout stands from stores with high levels of shoplifting. In 9,000 other stores, Dollar General will convert some or all of its self-checkout registers to regular checkout with cashiers, while limiting self-checkout to purchases of five items or less in around 4,500 stores. The company aims to reduce shrink (retail losses) through these measures. Dollar General used artificial intelligence to identify stores with the highest levels of stolen merchandise. Other retailers, such as Booths and ShopRite, have also removed or pulled back on self-checkout stations due to similar concerns. Target, on the other hand, is implementing “express self-checkout” lanes with limits of 10 items or less in most stores.
